I really want to be a professor in canada when I grow up and I can say thanks to Carrie Derick. She was the first Canadian woman to ever teach in a Canadian university in Canada. She worked at McGill university. One thing that she did that was great is that she got many degree's for arts and worked very hard for them! She showed people that a women can work hard and earn a living teaching as good as men and she helped every girl that a girl can try her best and if she works hard she'll reach her goal!
Carrie Derick got some degree's from McGill university. One was the Bachelor of Arts degree by graduating at the top of her class in natural science with First Rank Honours. Another was Master of Arts degree than she was appointed as a full-time demonstrator at McGill, since the University refused to appoint her to the higher position of lecturer. She was the first female instructor at McGill can you believe the way woman were thought of back then!
Carrie was a smart girl and she got very high marks in natural science In 1901, she attended the University of Bonn and completed the research required for a Ph.D. but was not awarded one since the University did not give Ph.D. degrees to women at the time. Derick also studied at Harvard, the Royal Academy of Science in England, and the Marine Biological Laboratory in Massachusetts. She was hired by McGill, where one of the courses she taught was “Evolution and Genetics.” There’s been some evolution in the appointment of women since, but they still only make up 30 percent of full-time fasculty and their median salary is about $13,000 less than their male colleagues.
She is a very important person in Canadian history because she showed Canada that she as one of the most determined person for trying to be a professor in a canadain university and showing canada that she worked and studyed hard to become a very good student and in the end she got to teach in a university. She was appointed a full professor by McGill in 1912, becoming the first woman in Canada to achieve university professorship. She introduced the teaching of evolution and genetics to McGill.

She got many degrees from McGill for art and she was very smart! she showed canada that girls can work as hard as boys and she was a very good example of working hard and reaching your goal. One thing lots of people did not know was that she was also a leader in early feminism, fighting for women's right, education, to vote, and work. She had a good life than Derick died on November 10th, 1941 in Montréal, Quebec. Her tomb stone is there now.
